Who was F. M. Alexander?
F.M. Alexander was born in Tasmania in 1869. As a young actor, Alexander experienced severe hoarseness and vocal strain, and was unable to find relief through traditional medical treatment. He thus embarked on a 10-year journey of self-study, eventually discovering that his vocal problems were only a symptom of a larger problem: pour use and functioning of his body and thinking. Alexander realized that his new understanding of the body and mind could help others, and he began teaching in Australia.
After moving to London in 1904, he continued to teach and develop his Technique until he died in 1955. He opened his first teacher training program in London in 1031. Established in the USA in 1987, the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT) certifies teachers who have successfully completed a rigorous three-year, 1600-hour training program.
